ABOUT

Moving Fireplaces is a platform exploring migration phenomena as a past and present reality in Banat and in Europe.

The fireplace is a symbol of comfort, safety and warmth linked to our home. However, past and present phenomena such as forced relocations, political conflicts and unemployment are making fireplaces move.

Moving Fireplaces challenges xenophobia and intolerant behaviour, which are dangerously escalating in Europe, by telling the stories of people on-the-move and sensitising the public to an unavoidable reality.

We identify and present forgotten and undocumented true stories of past regional tragedies, told by survivors of the Bărăgan Deportation and by those who fled the communist regime and the war in former Yugoslavia in an analogy with the present movements of refugees and economic migrants.

Moving Fireplaces is part of the Timișoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture cultural programme, implemented by Prin Banat Association. Read the Timișoara 2023 Cultural Programme (revised version) at this link.

In 2021, the Moving Fireplaces: Centriphery edition was co-financed through the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and included in the TM2023 RESTART Cultural Programme of the Center for Projects Timișoara.

In 2018, 2019, and 2021 (partially), Moving Fireplaces was co-financed by the Timiș County Coucil.

Between 2017-2020, the project was possible with the support of Timișoara City Hall.
